Lisa lives in Christchurch and uses a mixture of screen printing and reverse painting on perspex to create her fabulous artworks.

Worth More Than Gold is reversed painted on perspex which is then mounted over gold leaf - the effect being quite ethereal. The photos don’t capture the depth of this painting. It is framed in black wood and measures 73cm wide by 53cm high.

‘There was a time when gold meant nothing, when a daisy was a treasure, and the trust of something wild was enough to fill an entire heart.

Then somehow, we grew-up.

 Perhaps innocence is only truly understood once we realise how quietly we lost it – and how no amount of gold could ever buy it back.’ 

The child and fawn have been reverse hand drawn and painted on Perspex, then floated above a richly textured gold-leaf background.

The space between the layers allows the figures to cast subtle shadows across the gold, creating a sense of depth and movement. As the light changes around the work, the gold catches it and gently twinkles, meaning the piece is never quite the same from one moment to the next.

The gold is deliberately more than decoration. It represents wealth and the value we place on material things, while the innocence of the child and fawn speaks of another kind of richness – the things we cannot buy, replace or hold onto forever. Childhood. Wonder. Trust. Our connection with nature.

Among all that gold sit the smallest and simplest of flowers – daisies. Symbols of innocence, purity and new beginnings, they quietly echo the vulnerability of both the child and the fawn. Against a background associated with wealth, the humble daisy becomes a reminder that something does not need to be expensive to be precious.
